My Work with Alexander Technique

In my approach, Alexander Technique sessions include direct experiences, insights, learnings, conceptual tools and methods related to our bodies as we "use" them in everyday life. This education cummulatively empowers YOU to prevent or release unnecessary results of stress, injury, pressures of daily life.

Thus you progressively free up your energy, creativity, talents and potential by transforming the way you use your body with greater understanding of yourself. Although Alexander work most obviously addresses your well-being through the body, it also directly affects the well-being of your mind and emotional life since they are all interwoven.

If you are not familiar with the Alexander Technique and its benefits for you, please explore this website further and call me with any questions you might have.

I offer Alexander Technique sessions for individuals, couples and small groups, primarily in two locations in Philadelphia: my studio in the Old City neighborhood or in the East Falls neighborhood. Sessions at other locations can also be arranged.

All my Alexander sessions are individually tailored to your needs and goals, as well as covering the range of self-improvement tools and education comprising the Alexander Technique. The particular activities of your own daily life become vehicles for learning, and make my approach very practical with immediate results.

My work focuses on helping people explore and become who they really are and can become, with greater ease, clarity and expressiveness, regardless of their particular combination of stresses and/or chronic discomforts. The
Alexander Technique helps that happen in sometimes amazing ways, and I also use other tools, sometimes in combination with F. M. Alexander's work.

"Joanna and the Alexander Technique has led me to discover a lighter, freer way to interact with my instrument. I can now sit at the piano for long periods of time without the former back discomfort or becoming tense or exhausted. It is amazing how the sound of the music itself has improved and become more expressive, and with LESS effort rather than more. With periodic coaching, the audible enhancements continue."

– J. C. - classical pianist

"The practice of dentistry requires tightly focused attention, delicate manual dexterity, and working in close quarters in difficult postiions with patients that you could hurt if not careful enough. With Joanna's guidance and the Alexander process of self-discovery of choices of body use, I learned tools whereby the stress of relentless precision, "tightness, "difficulty," and risk of "hurting" the patient can be virtually eliminated. My future patients may never realize how completely my practice has been transformed, for their sake and my own."

– D. K. - dentist

"Through a series Alexander sessions with Joanna, I have become more grounded. I am now more aware, not to allow the daily stresses and demands of my life to cause unnecessary tensions and discomfort. I am now able to assess for myself and adjust the 'user-friendliness' of my work place, which often changes as my projects progress. Being able to work for long hours at a computer, without stressing my body and thus my mental well-being and skills, is a priceless benefit of this Alexander work."

– A. B. - architect
